Introducing Defend Shield™

Bringing our bullet-resistant glass to market was a long and demanding process. It took more than a year of development, rigorous testing, and certification to meet the strict requirements of UL 752 Bullet-Resistant Glass standards. The result is what we proudly call Defend Shield™—a name that reflects exactly what it does.

Defend Shield is a true protective barrier, engineered to defend against threats posed by firearms. It protects families, employees, students, and communities—at home, at work, in schools, and in public spaces.  With research showing that approximately 85% of school shooting fatalities involve handguns, and 33%–50% involve AR-15–style rifles, Brick Glass could not stand by doing nothing. Instead, we focused on certification levels that reflect the most likely and dangerous threats our clients face.

Certified Protection Where It Matters Most

Most residential break-ins involve handguns, which is why UL 752 Level 1 Certification is critical. Defend Shield - Level 1 Bullet-Resistant Glass, is designed to stop handgun rounds such as the 9mm, with projectile speeds up to 1,175 feet per second (fps). Our no-spall products ensure that even when the glass is struck, dangerous fragments do not enter the protected space.

For scenarios involving multiple shooters or repeated handgun fire, Underwriter Laboratories require Level 7 certification. Brick Glass didn’t stop at Level 7.  We went to Level 8 because it protects against both the: 5.56 mm rifles with soft-core projectiles traveling at approximately 3,080 fps; and the 7.62 mm rifles with soft-core projectiles traveling at approximately 2,750 fps.

To address the most common threats across industries, we went the extra mile to develop glass that covers the full range of common, real-world risks.  Brick Glass obtained UL Certification for Levels 1, 3, 5 and 8, which cover the most common threats we are likely see in our lifetimes. Level 3: Protects against one to three shot clusters from various common handguns at 1350 fps to 1485 pfs.  Examples of those handguns are the .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum—commonly used in attacks on schools, utilities, police stations and municipal offices.  Levels 5 and 8: stop one to five shots from various rifles and submachine guns including the 7.62 mm rifle; 9mm submachine gun, 5.56 mm rifle and the 7,.62mm rifle, protecting high-risk facilities, military bases, critical infrastructure, armored cars, and data centers against threats.
